I had pictured a castle set by a foggy canyon and I went from there. I may take this one further and develop a story for it.

Castillo del los Mosca means Castle of the Fly, since while trying to paint this piece, a pesky fly was irritating me by buzzing around my head. That's all there is to it. I needed to create something from scratch versus just copying something directly. I learned a lot from this, customizing my brushes accordingly, and fine tuning how I set up photoshop to work with the Wacom most efficiently.

I mainly wanted to try a different approach to digital painting: I really enjoy looking at juicy pieces that have full confident colors, as opposed to very transparent layers piled on top of one another. Sitting down and closing my eyes, I tried to visualize how I would go about digital painting in the same manner as I would traditional painting. This is a step in the right direction.

Watchmen Painting #2

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SJ-9vs4AG4I/AAAAAAAAAJU/64Si0tl3ygA/s200/Picture+13.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233109919225355138" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SJ-9v--UceI/AAAAAAAAAJc/x_yoF4FesxA/s200/Picture+6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5233109924083692002" />

Another quick painting from Alan Moore's Watchmen. I had expected to be in Puerto Rico for a week, but ended up being out and about for a month. I did not bring my art supplies figuring I will be back soon enough. Big mistake.

However, back home, I wanted to continue with my painting. For inspiration, I turn to Alan Moore's Watchmen: I merely painted the panels for practice, to let the stylus feel comfortable in my hands again.

Blacksmoke Paintings

Now...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SHKYN-kRnjI/AAAAAAAAAI8/K-jUbn_YlHs/s200/Picture+5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220402283976695346" />

Before...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SHKYN7mLdMI/AAAAAAAAAI0/SoPYM356zpw/s200/Picture+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220402283179373762" />

Way Back When...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SHKYNn3A31I/AAAAAAAAAIs/3DERTci1dkw/s200/Picture+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5220402277881274194" />

I have been trying to paint Blacksmoke for years. He is my own comic hero whom I have developed over the course of nearly my entire life. Slowly, but surely, I am getting better at digital painting, actually learning more from trying to touch up photographs. Since I draw, I try to draw while painting, when I have to more appropriately paint from the beginning. However, I must constantly stay in tune with my methods of illustration, which I tend to lose focus a little while painting digitally. The final painting here, I really tried to stay in tune with all aspects of my draughtsmanship and while slapping more juicier parts of color on the canvas.

The hardest thing about this character is that as I suck less with drawing, I revisit Blacksmoke and redraw him. So I am barely satisfied. However, I have been spending several months drawing him and trying to use my new techniques in developing the character. I do not post those drawings on here as I am scared of someone stealing one of my most precious creations.

Texture and the Ball Point Pen

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4SRxlP0fI/AAAAAAAAAH0/JT0mGSCLD8o/s200/Picture+12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210121915490882034" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4SSPZmpkI/AAAAAAAAAH8/r17hDzimebg/s200/Picture+9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210121923495110210" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4SSVcDZcI/AAAAAAAAAIE/KahQ6-ZTegA/s200/Picture+10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210121925115995586" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4SSmJrE9I/AAAAAAAAAIM/12--CkBttL0/s200/Picture+11.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210121929602307026" />

From my last storyboards, I realized I had incorporated a combination of Anime styled drawing with a traditional Western style. Within my sketchbook, I began exploring this look, and attempted to add a sense of detail and texture I normally didn't think about. With my Star Trek drawings submitted to the late Perpetual Entertainment, I eagerly waited for my response. They told me how I needed to incorporate tightness, completeness, and texture into my drawings. So with this in mind, I began my self-motivated education towards achieving this.

The first picture a complete drawing from a simple doodle I had made at SCEA (as a game tester). I liked the drawing so much, except that it was on some blue scratch paper with other stuff on it. So I redrew it. The second my version of a Xenomorph to try to practice organic texture. I got carried away and worked on my Reaper character in the next two images.

The Girl From Yesterday

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4GnjpMLGI/AAAAAAAAAHM/Cwo2x_O9HWc/s320/story1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210109095566912610" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4GoY-SCvI/AAAAAAAAAHU/KtruGCCWxDE/s320/story2.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210109109882456818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4Gok8yuZI/AAAAAAAAAHc/G-g-jYX2nsM/s320/story3.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210109113097435538" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4Go8BBSOI/AAAAAAAAAHk/1bA1rKBjtZg/s320/story4.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210109119289182434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/SE4GpYQj9_I/AAAAAAAAAHs/7o8v0fK1g9Y/s320/story5.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210109126870562802" />

I haven't posted to my blog in a long time, and a lot of things happened. But primarily, I just simply stopped drawing for several months when money got real tight, and I had to work a lot. After a while, a friend bought me a sketchbook, and I was back into it again!!!

Here are the some of the storyboards for The Girl From Yesterday by Huy Vu. It is a quaint little tale about a guy who likes a girl who likes candy. He commissioned me to draw up some beats for his script so that he can present it to his class. I really learned my style of drawing and my method for creating storyboards. Though tedious, this project actually helped me out to get reinspired with drawing.

These are just few of the scans. Notice how the first few pages are really sporadic and not organized. As I carried on I developed my little system and the characters became easier to draw and work with.

The Maniacal Man

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/R7e17kHlrpI/AAAAAAAAAGk/UtyP69j54lU/s320/Picture+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5167799132343348882" />

After getting the book, The Art of Midway for Christmas, I wanted to get back into painting more concept stuff. By using brushes that simulate the way I draw in real life, I have come one step closer to my goal. Here is a quick painting (probably 3 hours) I did of Steven Drowser, The Maniacal Man. I picture him as someone from a wasteland, but in an era reminiscent of steampunk with a Star Wars bounty hunter touch. I may explore this character further, creating more story telling poses.

eCards?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RtJxTTH16ZI/AAAAAAAAAF0/XDZSocb4mLE/s320/Picture+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5103265904128813458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RtJxTzH16aI/AAAAAAAAAF8/jEDUw4QWT10/s320/Picture+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5103265912718748066" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RtJxTzH16bI/AAAAAAAAAGE/slTkD8KhRSg/s320/Picture+4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5103265912718748082" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RtJxUDH16cI/AAAAAAAAAGM/VEUj0jQ0W4g/s320/Picture+7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5103265917013715394" />
I have been working on a bunch of eCard designs for the owner of Seabowl. I need to make a BUNCH of stuff, so I have been really looking at a lot of illustrations and trying to get a varied approach...to make it appear as if all these are not done by one artist. I am really learning a lot by working on these; also I have been discovering which application works well for this environment: Photoshop or Painter. For me, it seems that painting is done in painter, but touching up, color, and layout is best done in photoshop. Painter gives that nice randomness that one gets from real life painting, so for that I am a fan. However, I still love my Photoshop!

The goal of these pieces is not to spend too much time on them, but to get a lightning fast process, while retaining a whimsical feel.

Star Trek Design: Franklin Class

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RkI-eioqOxI/AAAAAAAAAFU/-gh6YZHMdNg/s320/franklinClass-silhouettes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062677625532201746" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RkI-eyoqOyI/AAAAAAAAAFc/6ivrXkI5EvY/s320/franklinClass-concepts.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062677629827169058" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RkI-fCoqOzI/AAAAAAAAAFk/kUXb8Anjpo8/s320/franklinClass-ideations.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062677634122136370" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RkI-fSoqO0I/AAAAAAAAAFs/J86QNRw-700/s320/franklinClass-design.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062677638417103682" />
Twenty years after Praetor Shinzon was defeated by Federation forces, a new starship was developed. He had the idea of a mountain of dead bodies and Mr. Burns from The Simpsons holding the American flag. I drew some thumbnails out, and then made a quick comp in photoshop (also above) to show him. He said he would like more black in the painting, not to resemble so much hell, but just war.

I began about two weeks ago, but I only work on it twice a week for about two hours at a time...so probably about 8-10 hours so far. A few more hours and it will be complete and ready to go.

Venice circa 1900

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RjkFFyoqOuI/AAAAAAAAAE8/P5Cye8a0VFg/s320/Picture+10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060081253377260258" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RjkEhCoqOsI/AAAAAAAAAEs/zOWWht0QARY/s320/p-09-left-veniceenv-thumbs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060080622017067714" />
I wanted to come up with a layout for a fictional Venice circa the 1900s. A small tribe of prehistoric Manatees lived in the warm tropical waters of E'Kek (modern day Gulf of Mexico). However, when the cold came, the ice encroached. It surrounded them slowly as they went out on their normal lives, grazing for food, living, relaxing. Before they knew it they were surrounded by walls of ice, and their sea became colder and colder...and their light became dark.

100 million years later, the underwater cave which housed their glacier finally broke open because of oil drilling near the surface. And Magnon (pictured above during his first encounter with a motorboat) with his tribe were freed only to see the world they lived in no longer existed. Their adventure begins...

Maquette of Magnon (in a grumpy mood), ideations of the other members of his troupe, and Magnon's encounter with a motorboat.

The Ruins of Kardafa

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RjEbFioqOmI/AAAAAAAAAD8/koyFE_19rHw/s200/Picture+3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5057853638524418658" />
Will the civilized world triumph over the classical? Perhaps, the destruction of one gives birth to another. Here you can see Kardafa, a classical civilization similar to Greece, shattered and torn, solemn and dying. In the distance, the Mecha, the world of tomorrow, a new order to old chaos. The cranes and machines pummel the stone arcades and pathways, and we see the doom coming closer. Or more appropriately, we are doomed, and we see the new encroaching. The artist who designed the ambigrams is John Langdon. He has a very interesting site, and is very proficient in creating these works of art. Far from the super-computer based designs stated in the book, ambigram creation is very cool and provides interesting results. I have made the logo of a coworker's band, Malicious Wishes with the "M" and the "Wi" being a flippable design, and I have also made my name into one as well.

The Hunter's Lodge

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RiZu6MvSAkI/AAAAAAAAACk/6mXKkLASUxg/s320/Picture+6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5054849577900966466" />

This is a pencil drawing of a Hunter's Lodge with a special history:

He was a hungarian officer from WWII, who was downed in Africa. He had to survive with his trusty carbine in the wilderness for a month, when he came in contact with a mighty rhinoceros. Nearly killed, he killed the beast...which was white, with a long mane, and a long twisted horn. He was found shortly thereafter, with newspaper's detailing how he killed a unicorn. Then he set out to find the beasts that inspired all myths.

A Funeral Piece...Part 2

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RiZtVMvSAjI/AAAAAAAAACc/2GReOUKMXTo/s320/Picture+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5054847842734178866" />
My friend's close grandfather recently passed away, and he asked me for the favor of drawing the different stages of his grandfather's life. I was glad to do it, though some of the reference materials were in horrible condition (i.e. old photos with cracks and faded). The family was enthralled at the piece, and I think to this day, the children all fight for the piece.

A Funeral Piece...Part 1

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_OKccsrbX5-8/RiZsccvSAiI/AAAAAAAAACU/syeG1bP_Fao/s320/Grandma+%26+Grandpa+%232.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5054846867776602658" />
My cable guy, Don, once came over and saw some of my drawings on the wall while working on my internet.
